Description
Cornell Dubilier (CDE) Orange Drop capacitors are premium film capacitors, known for their distinctive orange epoxy coating, designed for high stability, low inductance, and durability in high-voltage AC/DC applications. Originally introduced by Sprague in the 1960s, these non-inductively wound components are popular in tube amplifiers, industrial power supplies, and as high-quality upgrades for guitar tone circuits.
Key features and types include:
- Construction: Available in polyester (225P, 418P) and polypropylene (715P, 716P) film/foil types, ensuring excellent reliability and low dissipation.
- Performance: They offer high pulse current capability and, in polypropylene models, a virtually linear temperature coefficient.
- Specifications: Capacitance ranges from 0.22nF to 10µF, with voltage ratings from 100VDC to 2000VDC.
- Applications: Widely used in audio gear, power supplies, and particularly as tone caps (0.022µF – 0.047µF) in electric guitars.
- Popular Types:
- 715P/716P: Polypropylene, often preferred for superior high-frequency performance and low distortion.
- 225P: Polyester, commonly used for its robust, classic tone in guitars.
CDE acquired the Orange Drop line in 2012, continuing its legacy of high-performance components for demanding circuits.
